The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that is played with two or more people. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. Each player places an initial amount of money into the pot, called an ante or blinds, before they are dealt 2 cards. After the cards are dealt there is a round of betting. During each betting interval a player has the choice to either call a bet (put into the pot the same amount as the previous player) or raise it. If a player raises, they must put in more than the original bet amount. If a player calls, they must stay in the hand until the end of the betting phase.

Once the first round of betting is over a 3rd community card is revealed and another betting phase begins. During the third betting phase, players can try to make the best 5 card poker hand they can. The best hands are: A straight, flush, three of a kind, full house and two pair.

When playing poker you are going to get caught with some really bad hands. But that’s okay, everyone does it. Just keep working on your strategy and don’t be afraid to learn from your mistakes. Also, remember to only gamble with money that you are comfortable losing. It’s a good idea to track your wins and losses as you play, especially when you start getting more serious about the game. You can do this in a poker journal or app.
